Vijayadashami Festival Dates, Celebration and Significance

Vijayadashami Festival

The auspicious festival celebrating the victory of good over evil, marking Lord Rama's triumph over Ravana and Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura.

History & Spiritual Significance

Mythological Origins

Mahishasura Vadh

The most celebrated legend tells of Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. When the demon received a boon that no man or god could kill him, the divine trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva combined their powers to create Goddess Durga. She battled Mahishasura for nine days and nights, finally defeating him on the tenth day, which is celebrated as Vijayadashami.

Rama's Invocation

According to Ramayana, Lord Rama performed Chandi Puja to seek Goddess Durga's blessings before his battle with Ravana. This akaal bodhan (untimely invocation) during autumn established the tradition of Shardiya Navratri. The goddess blessed Rama with divine strength, leading to his victory over the ten-headed demon king.
